[T-983] Active immersion first impressions
Dear Rine,
Under the pretense of still being ill, today I afforded myself about three hours of active immersion, making my first clumsy steps.
I wasn’t aiming for any particular number of sentences to find. I just watched an episode of a TV show and pulled out whichever sentences I felt like.
In the end I got a total of 25.
It would be cool if I would be able to maintain this kind of schedule, but it’s not realistic. Soon it will become a challenge to balance both immersion and SRS and the rest of my life.
But I used some slack I had these days to configure the migaku plugin and to install some monolingual dictionaries.
I also will set up yomichan by the end of the day.
Thanks for the relevant Refold links you sent me yesterday, it was very timely.
What I did
- Reps
- Active immersion
- Immersion iPod armed (now that I’m mobile again)
Obstacles for tomorrow and afterward
- Need to figure out a low-friction workflow to migrate Anki cards to SM items. I am aware of Raj’s converter, it’s just that I have a complicated setup where my Anki is on my Mac OS whereas SM is on the VM hosted on my wife’s laptop, which I access through my macbook.
- For some reason, my macbook shuts off at about 40% battery if it’s not plugged in
- About active immersion: I have to find a balance between looking up everything vs letting go of things that are too much for now. I also sometimes fall to the temptation of peeking at the English sub if it’s a particularly nagging plot point or if I want to verify my understanding
- It will be a challenge to incorporate both SRS + Active Immersion while maintaining the rest of my life.
